What Fall Prep Actually Looks Like on Our South Carolina Homestead

I get ridiculously excited when fall starts showing up in South Carolina.

And yes, part of that is because I love fall décor, cozy blankets, warm colors and making the whole house feel like a Hallmark movie.

But there is another reason.

It is finally not 110 degrees outside.

Okay, maybe that sounds dramatic, but if you have ever tried deep-cleaning a goat shelter or chicken run in the middle of a South Carolina summer, you understand exactly why cooler weather feels like a gift.

Fall on our homestead is not really about suddenly starting a giant list of brand-new animal chores. The truth is, most of those chores never stopped in the first place.

That’s homestead life. There is always something that needs cleaned, filled, checked, fixed, fed or somehow has managed to get dirty five minutes after you cleaned it.

Fall just makes doing all of it a whole lot nicer.

The Goats Don’t Suddenly Need Fall Care — They Need Good Care All Year

One thing I never want to make this sound like is that I suddenly start paying attention to the animals because the seasons changed. Nope.

Our goats are checked constantly. Their bedding, shelters, feeders and water bins are cleaned throughout the year. I keep fresh minerals available and stay on top of their copper needs as part of our normal routine.

This is simply what I do with my own herd, not a one-size-fits-all feeding or health recommendation. Every herd and setup is different.

Fall Does Mean One Really Good Deep Clean

When fall gets here, the cooler weather gives me the perfect excuse to really go after the goat enclosure.

Not because we weren’t cleaning all summer.

Because now I can do it without feeling like I’m going to melt into the ground.

Fall is when I like to deep-clean the whole enclosure, shelters, feeders and everything else I can get my hands on. There is something very satisfying about getting everything cleaned up and reset when the weather changes.

Although with goats, I’m pretty sure they see a freshly cleaned area as a personal challenge.

And Then There’s Baby Goat Watch

This is one of the things that makes fall especially exciting around here.

If our does were successfully bred over the summer, by around October we should have a much better idea of who is expecting.

And our hope? Christmas-break babies.

So while other people are thinking about Christmas cookies and wrapping presents, I may also be thinking about baby goats.

And I am completely fine with that.

Actually, I’m more than fine with that. I get ridiculously excited about it.

The Chickens Get Their Fall Reset Too

The chickens get checked and cared for all year — fall just makes the deep cleaning a lot more comfortable.

The chickens are pretty similar to the goats in that their health and living areas are not things I suddenly remember when fall comes around.

They get checked pretty much every day. Their coop, bedding, feeders, water and run are things we keep up with all year.

But again... cooler weather.

That means I can really get in there and give everything a good deep clean without questioning every life choice that led me to standing in a chicken run in the summer heat.

The coop gets cleaned out, bedding gets refreshed, the run gets attention and the feeders get a good cleaning.

Nothing glamorous. Just real homestead chores.

And probably at least one chicken standing directly in the spot I am trying to clean. Because obviously.

Meanwhile, the Indoor Animals Are Living Their Best Lives

Our dogs, cat and rabbit live inside, so they are not part of the outdoor weather-prep routine like the goats and chickens are.

Their biggest fall adjustment is probably watching me completely transform the house around them.

Fall Prep Inside the House Means DECORATING

Of course it does.

Would this even be my house otherwise?

When fall starts coming, the summer décor comes down and I give the house a really good deep clean before everything gets switched over.

I love that part. Well... maybe I love the finished part more than the cleaning part.

But once everything is clean and the fall décor starts going up, it feels like a brand-new beginning.

The warm colors come out. The pillow covers change. The blankets show up. Everything starts smelling like fall. And suddenly the same house feels completely different.

That seasonal reset genuinely makes me happy.

Then I Have to Figure Out What the Summer Garden Has Left for Me

One of those end-of-summer harvests that makes me start thinking about what I can still preserve.

Fall also means walking through the summer garden and figuring out what we still have left.

Anything worth harvesting gets picked, and then I start looking at what I can still preserve.

If the summer garden is still giving me something, I’m going to use it.

If the garden is still giving me cucumbers, beans, squash or anything else worth saving, I’m going to squeeze every last bit out of it before summer is officially done.

If that means one more round of canning jars all over my dining-room table, then that’s exactly what happens.

One more round of canning before I finally admit summer is over.

I hate seeing perfectly good food from the garden go to waste, so I’ll squeeze every last bit I can out of the summer garden before I finally admit that summer is over.

And then... full-blown fall garden mode.

This is what fall garden planning looks like around here.

When I start planning the fall garden, this is what I reach for because I want to know what I should plant together instead of randomly putting things wherever I have an empty spot.

Because that is absolutely something I would do otherwise.

And once I start planning that fall garden? It’s over. I’m officially in fall mode.

The Truth About ‘Fall Homestead Prep’

I could make this sound like fall comes and suddenly we completely change everything we do for our animals.

But that wouldn’t be true.

Homestead chores never stop.

The animals still need cared for when it is freezing, when it is raining, and when South Carolina feels like the surface of the sun.

For us, fall is less about completely changing our routine and more about getting a chance to reset everything.

Deep-clean the outdoor areas. Refresh what needs refreshing. Check the goats. Clean up the chicken areas. Finish whatever the summer garden is still giving us. Start planning the fall garden. Deep-clean the house. Put away summer. And bring on fall.

That’s probably why I love it so much.

There is something about changing seasons that feels like getting to start fresh without actually starting over.

And after a long, hot southern summer? I am VERY ready for that fresh start.

Bring on the cooler weather, the fall garden, the cozy house... and hopefully some Christmas-break baby goats.
