What I’d Put on a Baby Registry If I Had to Do It Again

If somebody handed me an empty baby registry today and said, 'Do it again,' I would build a much more practical list than I probably would have the first time.
I would focus on things that made daily life easier, buy smaller amounts of the things babies tend to be picky about, and leave room to learn what my actual baby liked after she arrived.
A Few Diapers in More Than One Brand
I liked Pampers when my daughter was smaller and Huggies as she got bigger. I would not assume that means one brand is universally better. Put manageable amounts on the registry and figure out the fit before stocking up.
Disposable Nursing Pads if You Plan to Breastfeed
These would absolutely go on my list. I leaked, and the washable ones were not enough for me. Disposable pads were one of those boring little products that saved clothing, bedding and my patience.
Comfortable Crossover Nursing Bras
Stretchy, simple and easy to move aside with one hand. That is what I wanted from a nursing bra. This is not the season of life when I need complicated undergarment engineering.
Velcro Swaddles or Appropriate Wearable Sleep Options
I loved Velcro swaddles when they were appropriate for my baby because they were so much easier than trying to wrap a blanket perfectly. I would check current safe-sleep guidance when choosing sleep products and when deciding when to stop swaddling.
A Safe Separate Sleep Space Near My Bed
Having my daughter right beside me in her own sleep space made nighttime care much easier. If I were buying again, I would choose a current sleep product that meets safety standards and follow current American Academy of Pediatrics guidance: firm, flat, separate sleep surface, baby on their back, no loose bedding, and room-sharing rather than bed-sharing for at least the first six months.
A Backpack Diaper Bag
This one is easy. Put it on your back, keep both hands available and move on with your day.
A Soft Sink Bath Cushion
I preferred bathing my daughter in the kitchen sink with a soft flower-style cushion because it felt much closer to her size than the baby tub I tried. She slid around less and I felt more confident handling bath time. I still kept a hand on her and stayed with her constantly around water.
Sleeper Gowns and Easy-Change Sleepwear
Nighttime diaper changes are enough work without buttons. I would register for clothing that is easy to open, change and close while barely conscious.
A Convertible Crib if It Fits Your Plans
I like the idea of furniture that can grow with a child instead of replacing it immediately. Not every family will use every conversion stage, but if you tend to keep furniture, it is worth considering.
A Pacifier Sampler Instead of a Lifetime Supply
Let the baby vote. Buy a few different styles and wait until your tiny boss chooses a favorite before buying twelve more.
