How I Make My Home Feel Like a Hallmark Movie for Fall

I loooooooove decorating for the seasons.
And I don’t mean putting one pumpkin on the table and calling it a day.
When fall rolls around, I want my house to look like fall, feel like fall, and smell like fall.
Give me warm colors, new pillow covers, ridiculously soft blankets, pumpkin spice anything, and cute little touches tucked around the house and I am happy.
Basically, I want to walk into my own house and feel like I somehow landed in a Hallmark movie.
Is that asking too much?
I don’t think so.
One of my favorite things about changing my décor is that every season feels like a little new beginning. It’s the same house and the same rooms, but once I switch everything around, it feels fresh again.
And here’s the other thing about me: I am absolutely a bargain hunter.
I love decorating. I do not love paying more than I have to.
If I can make my house feel warm, cozy and completely ready for fall without spending a fortune, that is exactly what I’m going to do.
My Fall Decorating Style
My everyday decorating style is definitely cozy country with farmhouse mixed in, so fall fits right into our home.
And when it comes to fall colors, I want all of them.
Orange. Rust. Dark red. Brown. Yellow. Gold.
Give me all that warm, cozy goodness.
I mainly decorate the rooms we actually spend our time in — the living room, kitchen, dining room, hallways and bathrooms.
And because farm life is such a big part of our home, I’m always looking for ways to sneak that into my decorating too.
If I find a cute seasonal chicken or goat that works with everything else?
Yeah... It’s probably coming home with me.
I also don’t completely redo the house for every single holiday.
I put out my basic fall décor first and leave it. Then I add Halloween pieces. Once Halloween is over, those come out and Thanksgiving gets added in.
That way I still get to change things up without completely starting over every few weeks.
And believe me, by the time Christmas comes around, I’ll be ready to do it all over again.
1. Pillow Covers Are Absolutely My Weakness
I am a sucker for pillow covers.
There. I said it.
Do I already own fall pillow covers? Yes.
Do I probably have enough? Also yes.
Does that stop me when I find another cute set at a good price? Absolutely not.
That’s why I love the look of these burnt-orange pumpkin pillow covers. Pillow covers are one of the easiest ways to completely change the feeling of a room without buying all new pillows.
Switch the covers. Add a blanket. Suddenly the couch looks like you did way more work than you actually did.
That is exactly my kind of decorating.
I also love the textured pumpkin design because it gives them that cozy farmhouse feel without being too much.
2. There Is No Such Thing as Too Many Soft Blankets
Okay. Maybe technically there is. But I personally have not found that number yet.
This orange pumpkin throw gives me that instant curl-up-on-the-couch-with-something-warm-to-drink feeling.
Throws are one of my favorite things to decorate with because they do double duty.
They’re useful when somebody gets cold, but they also make the room look cozier just sitting there.
I’ll drape one over the couch or a chair and suddenly there’s another layer of fall color and texture in the room.
And eventually I’m going to end up wrapped in it anyway.
So really, it’s practical. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
3. If the House Doesn’t Smell Like Fall, We’re Not Done Yet
For me, this part is non-negotiable.
The house can look beautiful, but if it doesn’t smell cozy, something is missing.
Pumpkin spice. Cinnamon. Apple. Vanilla.
Those warm scents immediately make the entire house feel different.
These pumpkin-spice wax melts also made me laugh because they have a little attitude to them.
And I appreciate décor — or anything really — that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Cute is good. Cute and funny is better.
Wax melts are also such an easy little change.
Put one in the warmer and suddenly the house smells like somebody has been baking all afternoon.
Whether anybody actually baked anything is a completely different story. No judgment here.
4. Give Me All the Warm Fall Lighting
Once the days start getting shorter, cozy lighting makes such a difference.
These little lighted fall trees caught my attention right away because you get those warm fall leaves plus the glow from the lights.
I can picture them on a console table, dining-room buffet, kitchen counter or tucked into a hallway.
And I’m going to give you one of my most important cozy-house decorating tips:
Turn off the big overhead light.
Seriously.
Turn on the lamps. Add the little seasonal lights. Turn on your wax warmer.
Suddenly the whole room feels about ten times cozier.
Hallmark movie mode: activated.
5. A Fall Centerpiece Without Making It Complicated
I love the look of dried flowers, grasses, cotton stems and all those warm fall colors mixed together.
An arrangement like this is my kind of decorating because you can put it on the dining-room table, kitchen island, buffet or side table and pretty much be done.
It looks like you tried really hard.
You did not have to try really hard.
Perfect.
I also love arrangements that mix those oranges and rusts with softer neutral colors because they work throughout the whole season.
Fall. Halloween. Thanksgiving.
Just change the little pieces around them.
6. Don’t Forget the Kitchen and Dining Room
The living room gets a lot of attention when people decorate for fall, but I love bringing the season into the kitchen and dining room too.
We spend so much time there that I want those rooms to feel cozy right along with everything else.
These woven trivets are the kind of thing I like because they work with all those warm fall colors without screaming FALL! at you.
They’re useful. They have that cozy farmhouse texture. And they’re neutral enough that I can use them after fall is over.
I am always happier spending money on something when I know I can get more than one season out of it.
Bargain hunter, remember?
7. Apparently Even My Cups Need to Know It’s Fall
Does anyone technically need a pumpkin glass? Probably not.
Would I happily drink my iced coffee out of one? Absolutely.
I love little seasonal things like this because they bring the season into regular everyday life.
It isn’t a giant decoration I have to find storage for.
It’s just cute.
Sometimes cute is enough.
And I am convinced coffee tastes better when it comes out of a cute cup.
I have absolutely no scientific evidence to back that up.
8. And Yes, I Will Match My House
Of course there’s a fall shirt in my collection.
If my couch, kitchen and dining room are dressed for fall, I might as well participate too.
This pumpkin graphic tee is exactly the kind of casual fall shirt I like.
Throw it on with jeans or leggings and you’re done.
Nothing fancy.
Just comfortable, cute and very obviously ready for fall.
Which pretty much sums me up this time of year.
My Easy Formula for a Cozy Fall Home
I really don’t think you need to completely redo your house every season.
And you definitely don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars doing it.
For me, it’s all the little things together that create the feeling.
Change the pillow covers. Add a soft blanket. Bring in warm colors. Put something seasonal on the table. Add cozy lighting. Make the house smell amazing.
That’s really it.
Those little swaps can make the same rooms feel completely new.
And when I finally finish decorating, turn all my little lights on, sit down and look around?
That is my favorite part.
It makes our home feel warm and cozy.
It makes me happy.
And every décor swap gives me that little fresh-start feeling that comes with a new season.
If I can get all of that while finding a good deal along the way? Even better.
And if there happens to be a chicken or goat hiding somewhere in the fall décor?
